Pune Tragedy: Pharmacy Intern Killed by Driver in Horrific Road Accident
A devastating accident in Pune’s Gokulnagar area on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a 20-year-old pharmacy student, who was returning home after her daily internship. The incident has sparked outrage over road safety and the dangers of allowing untrained individuals behind the wheel.
The victim, identified as Shreya Yeole, had just completed her internship at a private clinic in the Sukhsagarnagar locality, where she worked every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Around 2:30 p.m., while walking home along the footpath near her residence, she was fatally struck by a speeding cab that had veered out of control.
According to officials from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station, the cab part of a private tour operator’s fleet was being driven by 48-year-old Dattatray Gadekar, a man who did not possess a valid driving licence. The registered driver, Satish Honmane, who had been assigned the vehicle, reportedly handed over the keys to Gadekar despite being aware of his lack of qualification to drive.
Eyewitnesses and investigators described a chaotic scene. Soon after starting the engine, Gadekar reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The cab first rammed into a tree, then struck Shreya, pinning her fatally between the car and another tree. She died on the spot before any medical help could arrive.
“We have confirmed that the individual driving the cab at the time did not hold a valid licence and had limited driving experience,” said a senior police official. “Both the vehicle owner and the unlicensed driver have been taken into custody and are being booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act.”
Police Inspector Rahul Khilare, who is leading the investigation, noted, “Shreya was simply walking on the footpath when this out-of-control vehicle crashed into her. We are probing further to determine the full sequence of events and the level of negligence involved.”
The incident has left the local community shocked and grieving. Shreya had just completed her diploma in pharmacy and was interning to gain hands-on experience. Her life, filled with promise, was cut short due to what appears to be a mix of reckless decision-making and gross negligence.
