Pune Rain Update: Heavy Showers Lash District, Bhushi Dam Overflows, IMD Issues Orange Alert
Pune Rain Update – June 16, 2025: Heavy rainfall has gripped Pune district and surrounding regions as the monsoon gains strength across Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours, forecasting intense downpours from Pune to Kolhapur, particularly over the ghats.
Rain activity has intensified in the catchment areas of Pune’s dam network, which is crucial for the city’s water supply. The Khadakwasla project has received consistent rainfall in the last 24 hours:
- Khadakwasla Dam: 18 mm
- Panshet Dam: 25 mm
- Varasgaon Dam: 26 mm
- Temghar Dam: 23 mm
Currently, the Khadakwasla project holds 5.25 TMC of water, which is 1.35 TMC more than the same time last year, providing relief to Pune residents.
Meanwhile, in Lonavala, the popular Bhushi Dam has overflowed due to relentless rain over the past three days. In the last 24 hours alone, 143 mm of rain was recorded in the region. So far this season, Lonavala has received 791 mm of rainfall, significantly more than the 303 mm recorded by this time last year, showing a 488 mm increase year-on-year.
In Pune city, the maximum temperature recorded was 32.4°C, while Chinchwad and Pune city saw 60 mm of rainfall. While rainfall has slightly paused in the city, it continues to pour heavily in the ghat sections. The IMD has warned of possible landslides in certain areas due to the intensity of the rainfall. Citizens have been urged by the district administration and disaster response teams to remain alert and cautious.
Statewide Rainfall Scenario:
The monsoon is currently active across the state, especially in Western Maharashtra, with persistent heavy rainfall for the past two days. On June 16, the IMD has reported heavy showers in Mumbai, Thane, Vasai, and Kalyan, with rainfall resuming Sunday evening after a brief pause. Since morning, intense showers have been recorded in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar.
Though Mumbai’s local train services are operational, trains on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines are running 5 to 10 minutes late. In Vasai-Virar, low-lying areas have been submerged, causing disruptions in traffic and daily life. Light to moderate showers are expected to continue over the next few days in Mumbai and its suburbs.
Weather Alerts Issued for 22 Districts in Maharashtra:
- Red Alert: Ratnagiri
- Orange Alert: Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nandurbar
- Yellow Alert: Mumbai, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalgaon
As per IMD’s forecast, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely along the Konkan coast, with isolated incidents of flooding and waterlogging. Though Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur have not been placed under formal alerts, heavy rainfall is expected over the ghats, where tourists and commuters should exercise caution.
The Maharashtra government and IMD continue to monitor the evolving monsoon situation, and citizens are advised to stay updated via official channels.
