In a significant clarification for vehicle owners and cycling enthusiasts, the Maharashtra Transport Commissioner has issued a circular stating that there is no legal restriction on attaching cycle carriers to the rear of motor vehicles.

The circular, issued from the Transport Commissioner’s Office in Mumbai, highlights the growing use of bicycles due to increasing environmental awareness and health consciousness. Many motorists have begun using rear-mounted cycle carriers to transport their bicycles conveniently.

The circular points out that under the Motor Vehicles Act and the rules framed thereunder, there is no specific prohibition on the use of cycle carriers at the rear of vehicles. However, the department has been receiving complaints about traffic police and transport officers initiating legal action or filing criminal cases against vehicle owners for using such carriers.

Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has made it clear that no such penal action is warranted. The use of rear-mounted cycle carriers is permitted by law, and accordingly, all regional and sub-regional transport officials have been instructed not to take action against such vehicles.

This directive is expected to bring relief to cyclists and private vehicle owners who have faced unnecessary penalties. The move also promotes eco-friendly transport options and supports the state’s push towards sustainable mobility.

With this clarification, vehicle owners across Maharashtra can now confidently transport their bicycles using rear-mounted carriers without the fear of legal repercussions.
