Pune: Proposed Four-Lane Underground Road From Shaniwarwada To Swargate Receives Nod From Nitin Gadkari
Pune, June 23, 2025 – In an effort to find a permanent solution to the chronic traffic congestion in Pune’s central areas, the proposed four-lane underground road from Shaniwarwada to Swargate is set to play a key role. To secure funding for this important project, MLA Hemant Rasane has requested financial support from the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The minister responded positively and assured Rasane that a meeting would soon be held with concerned department officials.
During his Pune visit, Nitin Gadkari reviewed the project details at the Kaka Saheb Gadgil statue and the main entrance of Shaniwarwada. State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil was also present. Rasane submitted a formal request seeking support for the project. He highlighted that Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road are vital arteries in the city, handling lakhs of vehicles daily and facing severe congestion. These roads are critical north-south links and hold potential as future ‘link corridors.’
Given this backdrop, the proposed four-lane underground road is not only essential for easing traffic but also for protecting the environment and preserving Pune’s historical heritage. On the directive of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Public Works Department has begun preparing a detailed project report (DPR), and a proposal for funding has been submitted to the Finance Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Rasane stated, “Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road face constant congestion. To provide a long-term solution, a 2.5-kilometre four-lane underground road has been proposed. The DPR is in its final stage and will be completed within the next 15 days. With full support from Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and a request submitted to Nitin Gadkari for central funding, I am committed to making this dream project a reality.”
MLA Hemant Rasane also appealed for special assistance from the central government to restore the former glory of Shaniwarwada, a symbol of the rich legacy of Peshwa Bajirao I, who expanded the Maratha Empire to its greatest extent.
