Pune, June 25, 2025 – In a major relief for city motorists, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has directed towing agencies to stop levying towing charges if the vehicle owner is not present at the time of the violation. Only a no-parking fine will now be applicable in such cases.

This directive follows several complaints from citizens about overcharging and the rude behavior of towing staff, who are employed through a private agency. The commissioner made it clear during a recent meeting that towing personnel must maintain courtesy while dealing with the public, especially with parking violators.

Additionally, towing teams have been instructed to use loudspeakers to announce parking violations before taking action, giving owners a chance to move their vehicles themselves and avoid penalties.

Until now, the fine for illegal parking stood at ₹785 for two-wheelers—₹500 as the standard fine (including GST) and ₹285 for towing. For four-wheelers, the total fine was ₹1,071, including a ₹571 towing charge.

With the new rule, only the ₹500 fine will be collected if the vehicle is found unattended, easing the financial burden on vehicle owners and promoting fair enforcement practices.
