Bombay HC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance Of Drug, Cigarette Sale Near Schools; Orders Swift Police Action

‘My Son Is Gone, Now At Least Give Me His Semen’: Mother's Heart-Wrenching Plea Reaches Bombay High Court
The Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad Bench has taken suo motu cognisance of alarming reports on the sale of drugs, cigarettes, and e-cigarettes near educational institutions.
Expressing serious concern over young students being lured into addiction, the court described the situation as “disturbing” and warned that such exposure could lead to physical and mental ruin for impressionable youth.
A Division Bench comprising Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Y.G. Khobragade directed the police in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) to take urgent and effective steps against these illegal activities.
The court also appointed senior advocate P.R. Katneshwarkar as amicus curiae to assist in the matter and asked him to file a public interest litigation (PIL) to help formalise and strengthen future directives.
The court noted that illegal vendors near schools and colleges were targeting young students, enticing them into harmful habits through banned substances, and called for swift action to protect the youth from the grip of addiction.
