Good News for Pune Residents! The Pune Metro network is set to expand up to 80 kilometers, as the Central Government has approved two new metro corridors — Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi-Vitthalwadi. The project will cost ₹3,600 crore and is expected to be completed in four years.

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposed extensions. The responsibility of executing the project has been handed over to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro).

Previously, the extension of the existing Purple Line from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi and from Swargate to Katraj had already received clearance. The new proposals had been pending with the Centre for over a year.

Currently, Pune Metro services on the Pune–Ahilyanagar Road stretch only till Ramwadi. Commuters from Wagholi had to rely on rickshaws or cabs beyond that point. The demand to extend the line to Wagholi had been long-standing.

Once completed, the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk line will significantly benefit passengers arriving from Mumbai or Satara via State Transport (ST) or private vehicles, allowing them to use the metro from Chandni Chowk to commute across the city.

With these approvals, the overall Pune Metro network will grow to 80 kilometers, easing travel and reducing traffic congestion. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also emphasized that along with the Metro, the Pune Ring Road and a parallel railway corridor are essential to resolving the city’s traffic woes permanently.
