Actor Suniel Shetty has made a strong appeal to those living in Mumbai, saying that it is important to learn and speak Marathi while staying in the city. His statement comes at a time when language-based tensions between Marathi and Hindi-speaking communities continue to surface. Shetty’s words are being seen as a respectful nod to the local culture and have received positive reactions on social media.

Speaking at a recent event, Suniel Shetty clearly stated that though his roots are in Karnataka, Mumbai is his workplace and it is important to respect the local language. He said, “I live in Mumbai. Even though my janmabhoomi is Karnataka, my karmabhoomi is Mumbai. It’s okay if I don’t know Marathi. But if I speak in Marathi, it will make you and everyone else feel good.”

He further added that speaking in Marathi while living in the city should come naturally to its residents. “If I don’t speak the local language while living here, then even if it doesn’t bother others, it should bother me. I should feel bad about not knowing Marathi. Everyone should feel the need to learn the language while living here. Just like others speak Marathi, we should also be able to do the same.”

The video of his speech is being widely shared, with many calling it a much-needed reminder for those who have been living in Mumbai for years but have not made an effort to learn Marathi.

The Ongoing Language Clash

Mumbai has often seen tensions around the Marathi vs Hindi debate. Many migrants who come to the city for work choose to continue speaking their native language without acknowledging the local culture or language. This sometimes leads to misunderstandings and clashes.
