Mumbai's Van Rani Toy Train Returns, Adds Vistadome Coaches
Mumbai, July 17, 2025: After a gap of four years, Mumbai’s beloved ‘Van Rani’ toy train at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is back on track in a refreshed avatar with modern Vistadome coaches and an eco-friendly battery-powered system. The revival has been made possible through the efforts of Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry and MP from North Mumbai.
The toy train, one of SGNP’s star attractions since the 1970s-80s, had been out of service since May 2021 when Cyclone Tauktae caused extensive damage to its tracks and infrastructure. Now, equipped with transparent roofs, large glass windows, and vibrant animal and nature-themed artwork, the new Van Rani promises a scenic and educational experience for visitors—especially children.
The revamped train features four metro-style coaches and runs on battery power, making it more environment-friendly than the earlier diesel version. Trial runs of the train have already begun, and regular services will resume soon, giving tourists a chance to enjoy lush monsoon greenery within the park.
Officials noted that the timing is perfect as SGNP sees heavy footfall during the rainy season. With panoramic views from transparent roofs and modern seating for added comfort, the Van Rani is set to enchant a new generation of Mumbaiites.
