Pune Airport Records Passenger Growth As New Terminal And Green Initiatives Take Flight

Pune Airport Sees 1.7 Lakh Monthly Passenger Surge Over Two Years
Pune, July 18, 2025: Pune Airport has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past year, marking significant strides in infrastructure, passenger amenities, and sustainability. These developments underscore its emergence as a modern, efficient, and passenger-centric aviation hub.
The most notable milestone is the inauguration of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) by the Prime Minister on March 10, 2024. Operational since July 14, 2024, the 52,000 sq. meter terminal is designed to handle 9.5 million passengers annually, with a peak-hour capacity of 2,300 passengers.
Blending modern architecture with Pune’s rich cultural heritage, the terminal features a 200-meter verandah narrating Maharashtra’s legacy and a landscaped forecourt inspired by Shaniwar Wada gardens. Passenger comfort has been prioritized with 34 check-in counters, 15 lifts, 8 escalators, and 10 air-conditioned boarding bridges, five of which are newly added.

Smart technologies such as Visual Docking Guidance Systems (SVDGS), an Airport Operations Control Center (AOCC), and advanced TSA-certified baggage systems with RFID tracking ensure efficiency and security. The terminal’s GRIHA 4-star rating highlights eco-friendly initiatives like rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and a heat-reflective roof.
Pune Airport now offers expanded retail and F&B outlets, including the AVSAR Self-Help Group Store promoting women entrepreneurs and the Udan Yatri Café, a budget-friendly eatery run entirely by women. The airport’s connectivity has grown with new international routes to Bangkok and Dubai and regional links under the UDAN scheme.
In FY 2024–25, passenger traffic rose 9.8% to 1.04 crore, aircraft movements increased 7.5%, and cargo throughput grew 11.8%. A monumental national flag near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue further elevates the airport’s identity as a symbol of national pride.
Pune Airport’s transformation reflects its commitment to being a gateway of modernity while celebrating tradition, benefitting millions of travelers annually.
