Mumbai to Goa With Your Car, No Traffic Hassles: India’s First Ferry Train Launching Before Ganeshotsav

Mumbai, July 24: In a major travel update ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is set to launch India’s first car ferry train service. This new service will allow travellers to transport their private vehicles by train from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, while they themselves travel in attached passenger coaches.
A New Way to Travel to Goa
The road journey from Mumbai or Pune to Goa usually takes around 20 to 22 hours due to traffic and hilly roads. With this train, the same journey will take just 12 hours, offering a faster, safer and more relaxed option for travellers.
KRCL officials say the service will help reduce road traffic during festive seasons, especially Ganesh Chaturthi, when many people travel to Goa.
How It Works
The train, earlier used to carry trucks, will now carry private cars.
- Each train will have 20 wagons
- Each wagon can carry 2 cars, making space for 40 cars per trip
- The train will operate only if 16 or more cars are booked
Travel Schedule
- Departure: 5 PM from Kolad
- Arrival: 5 AM at Verna
- Reporting Time: 2 PM at Kolad for car loading and paperwork
Passengers are not allowed to stay in the car during the journey. Instead, they can travel in the following options:
- 3AC Coach: ₹935 per person
- Second Seating (SLR): ₹190 per person
- Maximum 3 people per car (2 in 3AC and 1 in SLR)
Car Transport Cost: ₹7,875 (one way)
Green and Convenient
The new service is also eco-friendly, as it helps reduce fuel usage and pollution. It is expected to provide a stress-free travel experience for families heading to Goa during busy holiday seasons.
With this launch, KRCL brings a first-of-its-kind travel solution in India, combining the ease of train travel with the comfort of using your own vehicle at your destination.
