IMD Issues Red Alert in Six Maharashtra Districts; Schools Shut in Palghar Amid Heavy Rains
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts across several districts in Maharashtra as the state braces for intense monsoon activity. The weather agency has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, prompting local authorities to implement emergency measures and issue advisories.
Red Alert in Six Districts
A red alert has been declared in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Gondia, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gadchiroli. The IMD warns of extremely heavy rainfall in these areas, with a high possibility of waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable zones. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Schools and Colleges Shut in Palghar
In Palghar, where heavy rains have already begun to disrupt daily life, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres on July 26. District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed the decision as a precautionary measure. Very heavy rainfall is forecast in the district within the next 24 hours.
Alerts in Ghat Areas of Pune, Nashik, and Satara
The ghat regions of Pune district are under a red alert, while ghat areas of Nashik and Satara are on orange alert. These hilly areas are particularly vulnerable to landslides and road disruptions during heavy downpours.
Konkan, Vidarbha, Marathwada Also on Alert
The IMD has placed parts of Konkan, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Western Maharashtra under orange and yellow alerts, urging residents and local authorities to prepare for significant rainfall.
Meanwhile, increased discharge from multiple dams has raised the risk of downstream flooding. Officials are closely monitoring river levels and have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain alert and ready for evacuation if necessary.
Heavy Rains Hit Mumbai
Mumbai witnessed heavy showers on Friday morning, causing slow traffic and affecting suburban train services, particularly on the Western Railway. According to the BMC Monsoon Report, rainfall recorded was:
- Island city: 29.40 mm
- Eastern suburbs: 29.44 mm
- Western suburbs: 18.88 mm
More rainfall is expected throughout the day, and authorities are monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
Caution Advised for Fishermen and Travellers
The IMD has urged fishermen and coastal travellers to exercise extreme caution due to rough sea conditions and rising water levels near rivers and dams.
