Mumbai, June 27, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the suspension of operations at a private blood bank in Badlapur after an inspection revealed multiple alleged violations related to blood collection, storage and quality control. The action follows an ongoing probe into the alleged diversion of blood from Mumbai’s JJ Metropolitan Blood Bank.

The FDA initiated the inspection after allegations surfaced that blood collected at JJ Metropolitan Blood Bank and through donation camps conducted in its name was allegedly diverted to the Badlapur-based Maya Blood Bank. The case came to light following reports claiming that 55 blood bags had been illegally transferred.

During its inspection, the FDA, along with officials from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), reportedly found several irregularities at the blood bank. These included the absence of proper records for the transportation of blood collected during donation camps, incomplete documentation on the use of blood bags, shortage of qualified technical staff and blood transfusion officers, use of outdated equipment, lack of quality control testing, irregular biomedical waste management practices and failure to obtain mandatory approvals for blood donation camps.

The regulator observed that these deficiencies could compromise the safety, quality and effectiveness of blood and blood components, potentially posing a risk to both donors and patients.

In view of the findings, the FDA has directed the blood bank to immediately halt all operations, including blood collection, testing, processing, storage, distribution, sale and the organisation of blood donation camps, until further orders.

FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said blood is a life-saving resource and its collection, processing and distribution must adhere to the highest standards of safety, quality and transparency.

He warned that the administration would not tolerate negligence affecting the health of blood donors and patients, and directed all blood banks in Maharashtra to strictly comply with legal and regulatory provisions, failing which stringent action would be taken.
