Major Accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway: 18-20 Vehicles Collide, 5 km Long Traffic Jam
Pune, July 26, 2025: A major accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway caused severe disruption near Datta Food Mall, just after the descent from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section. According to preliminary information, 18 to 20 vehicles collided in a chain-reaction crash after a container truck’s brakes failed.
The incident occurred on one of India’s busiest expressways, which witnesses over 1.5 to 2 lakh vehicles daily, especially during weekends. The heavy traffic flow today led to long queues of stranded vehicles extending up to 5 kilometres.
The container, reportedly speeding, rammed into a vehicle near Datta Food Mall, triggering a multi-vehicle collision. The impact was so intense that at least three vehicles were completely mangled. Several other cars sustained major damage, and multiple passengers are believed to be seriously injured. Emergency services rushed to the spot to aid the injured and clear the debris.
Traffic came to a complete halt, with police and local authorities working tirelessly to restore normalcy. Due to the congestion, traffic was being diverted to alternative routes wherever possible.
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter monitoring and enhanced safety measures on the expressway, particularly in accident-prone ghat sections.
