Pune: PMC Issues Alert Over Job Scams Targeting Contract Sanitation Workers

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has raised an alarm over increasing incidents of fraud involving sanitation workers employed through private contractors. The civic body has urged these contract workers to remain cautious and avoid falling victim to false promises of permanent government jobs in exchange for money.

In an official notice issued by the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department, the PMC clarified that it annually hires private contractors to manage road cleaning and sanitation work across its 15 ward offices. These contractors engage workers on a contractual basis, with no assurance of permanent employment.

However, PMC officials have received several complaints suggesting that some individuals are misleading contract workers by claiming they can secure them permanent jobs within the civic body—for a fee.

Sandip Kadam, head of the SWM department, stated, “We have come across cases where workers were duped by people pretending to offer permanent positions in exchange for money. These are completely baseless claims. The PMC has no such policy to regularise contract workers, and anyone making such assurances is misrepresenting facts.”

To prevent further exploitation, the PMC has directed all ward offices to display public notices and collaborate with local media to create awareness about these scams. Workers have been advised not to make any financial transactions based on such promises.

A senior PMC official, speaking anonymously, emphasized that all civic recruitments follow lawful and transparent procedures. “This advisory aims to safeguard our contract staff from being exploited. No employee should believe or engage with anyone asking for money in return for a job offer,” the official added.
