Pune: 1.5 Lakh Native Trees To Be Planted Along Roads In Pimpri Chinchwad
Pimpri: With an aim to enhance the city’s green cover and improve air quality, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated a large-scale native tree plantation drive across its municipal limits. As part of the initiative, indigenous trees are being planted at intervals of every 10 metres along the city’s main roads, with a target of planting 1.5 lakh trees during the 2025–26 financial year.
The initiative stems from the vision of PCMC Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh and is being implemented under the guidance of Additional Commissioner Pradip Jambhale Patil and Superintendent of Gardens Mahesh Gargote.
The campaign began with the ceremonial planting of the native ‘Ajan’ tree by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Santpeeth site. Since then, the plantation work has expanded across footpaths and roadside spaces along major city arteries, with over 19,500 trees already planted by July 31, 2025.
Priority is being given to roads and localities where existing green cover is low. Native species such as Tamhan, Kadamba, Neem, Bakul, Peepal, and Banyan are being chosen for their resilience, ecological benefits, and suitability to the local climate. Tree guards made of bamboo and iron are being installed to ensure their protection and survival.
This ambitious drive is being supported by citizens, resident groups, NGOs, corporates via CSR, and elected representatives, making it a citywide community effort.
“Planting native trees at 10-metre intervals on both sides of our roads will make Pimpri Chinchwad greener and more beautiful. The support we are receiving from citizens and organisations is very encouraging. I invite every resident to be a part of this mission and help build a cleaner, greener city.”
— Shekhar Singh, Commissioner, PCMC
“This initiative will significantly boost Pimpri Chinchwad’s green cover. It will aid in pollution control, temperature regulation, and overall environmental well-being. We urge more citizens to come forward and participate.”
— Pradip Jambhale Patil, Additional Commissioner, PCMC
“We have set a target of planting 1.5 lakh native trees this year. Indigenous species like Tamhan, Bahava, Neem, and Shisam will form the core of this effort. Planning and implementation are underway with long-term sustainability in focus.”
— Mahesh Gargote, Superintendent of Gardens, PCMC
