EVs Likely To Get Toll-Free Access On Samruddhi Highway, Mumbai–Pune Expressway and Atal Setu Soon
Nagpur/Mumbai, August 20, 2025 – In a significant step to promote eco-friendly transportation, the Maharashtra Transport Department is preparing to exempt electric vehicles (EVs) from paying tolls on the Nagpur–Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg. The new rule is expected to be implemented soon and will also extend to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Atal Setu.
The decision aims to encourage the use of EVs by reducing travel costs, while also addressing key concerns such as reducing pollution, saving fuel, and protecting the environment. Currently, the toll for light vehicles on the Samruddhi Expressway is ₹2.45 per kilometer. Once implemented, EVs traveling on the 701-kilometer-long Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg—which connects Nagpur to Mumbai via Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—will be exempt from this fee.
Both the central and state governments have been promoting EV adoption through multiple subsidy and incentive schemes. Officials believe that a toll waiver will further accelerate EV sales, offering citizens a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to fuel-based vehicles.
Experts highlight that increased use of EVs will help reduce pollution levels, mitigate environmental damage, and provide long-term health benefits for citizens. The upcoming announcement is expected to be a major boost for EV owners, making travel more affordable while contributing to the government’s vision of a greener Maharashtra.
