Pune, June 17: Commuters using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Thursday, June 18, should expect traffic restrictions as authorities undertake an emergency operation to remove a large rock lodged in a protective safety net above the Adoshi Tunnel in the Khandala Ghat section.

According to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), a special traffic block will be enforced between 12 noon and 2 pm to facilitate the safe removal of the rock, which reportedly became dislodged from the hillside and remains suspended in the safety barrier installed above the tunnel.

Officials stated that the operation is necessary to eliminate any potential threat to motorists, as the unstable rock could fall onto the expressway if not removed promptly.

Diversion Plan During the Block

For vehicles travelling from Pune towards Mumbai:

  • Heavy and multi-axle vehicles will be halted near the service road at Aunde Bridge (Km 59) close to Lonavala and will not be permitted to proceed during the maintenance period.
  • Light vehicles, including cars, will be redirected through the Missing Link connectivity route towards Mumbai.

For vehicles travelling from Mumbai towards Pune:

  • Heavy vehicles will be stopped near the Khopoli Toll Plaza at Chowk Phata until traffic movement resumes.
  • Cars and other light vehicles will be diverted via the old Mumbai-Pune Highway through the connecting link at the Khopoli exit near Km 39.

The temporary traffic arrangements have been announced by Additional Director General of Police (Highways) Pravin Salunkhe. Authorities have urged motorists to cooperate with traffic personnel and, where possible, avoid travelling through the affected stretch during the two-hour closure to reduce delays and congestion.

The precautionary exercise is being carried out to ensure commuter safety and prevent any untoward incident arising from the unstable rock formation above the tunnel.
