In a decisive move to empower young women through education and financial independence, the Maharashtra Government is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking scheme that allows female students to earn while they study. Under the newly proposed ‘Earn While You Learn’ initiative, up to five lakh girls enrolled in higher education institutions across the state will receive ₹2,000 every month for participating in part-time work alongside their academic programs.

This initiative is part of a broader vision by the state’s Higher and Technical Education Department to make higher education more accessible and sustainable for girls, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds. Recognizing the need for in-hand cash to support day-to-day academic expenses like books, stationery, and other personal essentials, the scheme is designed to provide both financial aid and valuable work experience.

The state has already taken several progressive steps to reduce the financial burden on female students. These include the complete waiver of tuition fees for girls across 842 different courses and a monthly subsistence allowance of ₹6,000 to help cover essential needs like rent and food. The ‘Earn While You Learn’ scheme aims to go beyond these measures by providing flexible income opportunities that can empower students to manage their own daily expenses independently.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil shared details about the scheme during a special event commemorating 100 years since Yasmin Surveyor graduated—the first woman in Asia to earn a commerce degree and an alumna of Sydenham College. During his speech, he emphasized the need to further boost the participation of women in higher education and announced a series of initiatives focused on achieving that goal.

As part of the scheme’s implementation strategy, colleges across Maharashtra will be encouraged to create small, part-time job opportunities either within their institutions or in collaboration with affiliated organizations. These roles will be reserved for female students who wish to supplement their education with practical work experience. Once selected, eligible students will receive ₹2,000 directly into their bank accounts every month.

A list of interested and qualified students will be compiled by each college and shared with the Higher and Technical Education Department for approval and processing. The scheme is designed not only to provide income but also to instill a sense of professional responsibility and skill development among participants.

The scheme is expected to cost the state ₹100 crore per month, translating to a yearly budget of ₹1,000 crore. Minister Patil mentioned that discussions for funding are already in progress with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, though he acknowledged that the current financial constraints may delay final approvals.

Despite the wait for financial clearance, the department is proactively working on building the scheme’s framework so that once the funds are secured, the rollout can begin without delay. This preparation includes outlining the operational model, identifying colleges that can offer job opportunities, and creating a database of eligible students.

The ‘Earn While You Learn’ initiative is more than just a financial aid program—it’s a step toward reshaping how education and employment intersect for women in Maharashtra. By integrating learning with earning, the state hopes to not only increase female enrollment in higher education but also equip students with skills and confidence that will benefit them long after graduation.
