Maharashtra Govt Clears Thane- Navi Mumbai Airport Corridor & Underground Metro From Wadala To Gateway Of India
Mumbai, August 21, 2025 – The Maharashtra government has approved a series of landmark infrastructure projects aimed at transforming urban transport across the state, including a 25-km elevated corridor connecting Thane to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the long-awaited underground Metro Line 11 from Wadala depot to the iconic Gateway of India.
The decisions were taken during a Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The CM stated that these initiatives would modernise public transport, improve regional connectivity, and accelerate urban development in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
Key Projects Approved:
- Thane-Airport Elevated Corridor (25 km): This high-speed link will provide direct access between Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airport, easing congestion and improving travel efficiency for commuters and businesses.
- Metro Line 11 (16 km Underground): The Rs 24,000 crore fully underground corridor will connect Wadala depot with Gateway of India, featuring key stations such as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk and Horniman Circle. The project will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
- Pune-Lonavala Corridor Expansion: Additional railway lines will be built to improve regional connectivity and reduce congestion, facilitating industrial and residential growth along the route.
- New Local Train Coaches: Under MUTP phases 3 and 3A, the government approved the procurement of 268 fully air-conditioned coaches with automatic doors and upgraded facilities. Ticket fares will remain unchanged.
Additionally, a new township and ring road project have been sanctioned for Nagpur to support urban expansion and decongest existing routes.
Officials believe these projects will significantly improve mobility, boost tourism, and drive economic growth across Maharashtra.
