Mumbai – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a two-week weather forecast indicating rainfall in several regions of Maharashtra during the upcoming Ganeshotsav. The report highlights the likelihood of above-average rainfall in parts of Konkan and North Central Maharashtra.

Forecast Highlights (August 21 – September 4, 2025)

  • August 21 – 28: North Konkan, including Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, is expected to receive 20-40 mm of rainfall per day. Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may experience comparatively lighter showers.
  • August 28 – September 4: Rainfall is likely to increase across the entire Konkan belt, with similar intensity of 20-40 mm daily.

District-Wise Rainfall Alerts

  • Raigad & Ratnagiri: Heavy rainfall possible between August 24 – 26.
  • Mumbai, Thane & Palghar: Isolated heavy showers expected on August 26.
  • Dhule, Jalgaon & Nandurbar: Thunderstorms with rain likely on August 24 & 25.
  • Pune, Kolhapur & Satara Ghat Areas: Localized heavy showers on August 26.

Monsoon Activity & Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)

Meteorologists predict an active phase of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) from August 24, causing low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal and moving northwestward. This could lead to renewed rainfall intensity across several districts, potentially increasing river water levels and reservoir storage in Vidarbha, Khandesh, and Sahyadri regions.

Impact During Ganeshotsav

With festive celebrations set to begin soon, authorities have advised citizens and local administrations to prepare for intermittent heavy rains, especially in Konkan and parts of Western Maharashtra.
