Pune RTO Adds Four AI-Enabled Radar Vehicles To Tackle Road Offences
Pune, August 31, 2025 – In a bid to curb reckless driving and rising road accidents, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and traffic department will soon introduce advanced radar technology to monitor speeding vehicles and enforce traffic rules across the district.
Officials revealed that the system will detect violations such as overspeeding, lane cutting, not wearing seat belts or helmets, and other breaches.
Once a violation is recorded, the radar system will automatically scan the vehicle’s number plate, verify details from the RTO database, and issue an instant e-challan to the offender via mobile or email.

The radar system uses radio waves to measure the speed of vehicles, even those travelling at 100–300 kmph. Mounted on interceptor vehicles equipped with cameras, speed detectors, and wireless communication systems, the technology can generate 700–800 e-challans per hour.
Authorities are also planning to expand the system to highways and major city roads soon to improve traffic safety and reduce accidents.
