Sindhudurg, September 5, 2025 — The Sindhudurg district administration has announced the closure of the Talere–Gaganbawada–Kolhapur highway (NH-166G) until September 12, 2025, after massive landslides blocked the Karul Ghat stretch. Traffic has been diverted via BhuiBawda Ghat (State Highway 171) and Fonda Ghat (State Highway 178) as alternative routes.
According to the National Highways Division, Ratnagiri, a major landslide in Karul Ghat has completely obstructed traffic flow. Debris removal work is underway on a war footing, and an expert engineering team has been called in to conduct inspections and carry out loose scaling to prevent further rockfalls. Officials estimate it will take at least eight days to make the route safe for travel.
The district administration emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and disaster management. Road closure orders were issued under Section 116 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and traffic authorities have been instructed to install proper signboards and indicators to guide commuters towards the diversion routes.
The Karul Ghat has a history of recurring landslides and vertical cracks, raising serious safety concerns. Authorities believe that completing stabilization work will help prevent future accidents and ensure smoother traffic movement.
