Three-year-old Siberian Husky Simba beaten to death; Nigdi Police register case, accused absconding
A shocking case of animal cruelty has surfaced in Akurdi, where a three-year-old Siberian Husky named Simba was brutally beaten to death with a stick and stones by an unidentified man. The incident, captured on CCTV, has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage among residents and animal welfare groups.
The complaint was filed by Rahul Sadashiv Markar (34), a businessman from Chikhali, who was caring for Simba on behalf of his family friend, Rukmini Galande. Markar, who owns two Huskies, had entrusted a caretaker, Bishna Dhami, with the dogs’ supervision near his showroom. On Saturday morning, Dhami alerted him about the assault, following which Simba was rushed to the Government Veterinary Hospital in Aundh, where he was declared dead.
According to CCTV footage, the accused first approached Simba around 11:30 pm on September 12 and struck him with a wooden plank and stones. The man returned again at 1:30 am on September 13 to continue the assault, dragging the injured dog away before dumping his body in a garbage bin. Disturbingly, the video shows Simba wagging his tail and playing innocently with the man before the attack.
Nigdi Police registered a case under BNS Section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) and Section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Police Inspector (Crime) Bhojraj Misal confirmed that the accused has been identified but remains absconding. “He will be arrested shortly, as a case has been registered with us,” Misal said.
Condemning the act, animal activist Padmini Stump, founder of Mission Possible Foundation, said, “In the videos, Simba is seen sitting calmly when the man approached him. He was lying down and relaxing when he was repeatedly attacked. This is nothing short of barbaric.”
The investigation is ongoing, with senior police inspector Mahesh Bansode assuring that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the perpetrator.
