Wakad Residents Demand Action as Illegal Footpath Encroachments Endanger Lives
A near-miss incident involving two elderly women, who were almost hit by a car after being forced to walk on the road, has reignited public anger over illegal encroachments on footpaths.
Residents allege that newly built footpaths and cycle tracks are being openly leased out to shopkeepers, car repair units, and hawkers, leaving no space for pedestrians. Locals accuse corrupt officials of profiting from the encroachments while putting lives in danger.
“This is not just inconvenience, it is life-threatening,” said Ayan Ganguly, a resident of Echoing Green society. Others demanded immediate removal of encroachments and strict accountability.
Ex Corporator Rahul Kalate confirmed repeated complaints and vowed to press for firm action, criticizing officials for weak enforcement. Citizens are now calling for an urgent anti-encroachment drive to restore footpaths and ensure pedestrian safety.
“We have directed the concerned department to conduct a thorough survey and formally report on the encroachment issue. If the encroachments are still observed tomorrow, strict action will be taken. We have issued a final notice to the department, and if the situation remains unresolved, we will deploy cranes and recovery vans to clear the area by tomorrow.” said Vinayak Gaikwad, Wakad.
