Pimpri-Chinchwad, September 24, 2025: To ease traffic congestion in Pune’s IT hub, the Wakad-Hinjawadi Bridge will now function as a one-way route during peak hours. Alongside this, changes have been introduced on the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass of the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway near Wakad and Hinjawadi.

The move comes after repeated demands from local residents and civic activists highlighting severe traffic problems in the area. Following a visit to Hinjawadi on Tuesday, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey interacted with residents and instructed the traffic department to implement immediate measures.

Police Inspector Rahul Sonawane, in charge of the Hinjawadi Traffic Division, explained that the changes will be trialed on an experimental basis. “In the mornings, the bridge will remain one-way from Wakad to Hinjawadi, with three lanes available in that direction and one for return traffic. In the evenings, the pattern will reverse, with three lanes allocated from Hinjawadi to Wakad,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Patil added that entry and exit points on the highway near Wakad and Hinjawadi have also been realigned. “We wanted to ensure that certain routes serve only as entry or exit points. Temporary barricades and clear signboards have been placed to guide motorists,” Patil stated.

Key Traffic Changes

Wakad-Hinjawadi Bridge

  • Morning (8 am – 12 pm): One-way from Wakad to Hinjawadi; three lanes for this direction, one lane for opposite flow. Motorists traveling from Hinjawadi to Wakad must use the Sayaji Underpass U-turn.
  • Evening (4 pm – 10 pm): One-way from Hinjawadi to Wakad; three lanes open in this direction, one lane in the opposite. Traffic from Wakad to Hinjawadi will be redirected via the Surya Underpass.

Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway Adjustments

  • Entry and exit points at Bhujbal Chowk have been changed, supported by barricading to streamline vehicle movement.
  • Vehicles from Mumbai will exit before Sayaji Underpass, while vehicles from Pune will exit before Surya Underpass.

According to officials, these changes reflect observed traffic patterns: heavy inflow towards Hinjawadi in the mornings and significant outflow in the evenings. Authorities have invited feedback from residents, who can submit their suggestions and objections at the Hinjawadi Traffic Division office in Bhujbal Chowk or the Traffic Branch office in Chinchwad Gaon.
