Pune District Identifies 121 Accident Black Spots; Pune-Solapur Highway Tops List With 46
Pune, June 26, 2026: The Pune district administration has identified 121 accident-prone locations (black spots) across highways and major roads in an effort to reduce the rising number of road accidents. The Pune-Solapur Highway has emerged as the most accident-prone stretch, accounting for 46 black spots, the highest in the district.
The issue was reviewed during a recent Road Safety Committee meeting, where the District Collector directed various government departments to conduct joint inspections of all identified black spots.
Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials have instructed road safety teams to visit each accident-prone location, identify the causes of accidents, and recommend both immediate and long-term corrective measures.
Pune district is traversed by several major highways that witness frequent road accidents. To improve road safety, the administration has initiated a coordinated exercise involving multiple agencies to assess hazardous locations and implement preventive measures.
What is a Black Spot?
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), a black spot is a road location where frequent serious accidents occur. A site is classified as a black spot if at least five major accidents resulting in 10 or more deaths occur within a 500-metre stretch over a period of three consecutive years.
Action Plan
As part of the initiative:
- Road safety teams will conduct on-site inspections of all identified black spots.
- Officials will analyse the reasons behind recurring accidents.
- The District Collector has directed all teams to complete inspections and submit signed reports.
- The findings will be reviewed at the District Road Safety Committee meeting scheduled for June 29, where immediate and long-term remedial measures will be finalised.
Joint Inspection Teams Formed
To ensure a comprehensive assessment, eight joint road safety teams have been constituted. The teams include representatives from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and the police. They will work in coordination with the district traffic police.
