Pune: Preliminary Investigation Finds Safety Lapses After Undri High-Rise Fire Kills 15-Year-Old, Injures Eight
Pune, September 27, 2025: A tragic fire broke out on Friday afternoon in a flat on the 12th floor of Marvel Ideal Society, a 14-storey residential building on Jagdamba Bhavan Road, Undri. The incident occurred at around 2:30 PM in Wing F, Flat No. 1201.
Upon receiving the alert, the Pune Fire Brigade immediately dispatched five fire tenders, one BA set van, two water tankers, a hydraulic ladder, and a government ambulance (108) to the site. Firefighters began battling the blaze using hose pipes while simultaneously checking for trapped residents.
The society was built in 2018 and has 420 flats consisting of 2 BHK and 3 BHK. The incident occurred in a 3 BHK apartment. The injured firemen were identified as Vishwajeet Wagh and Prithviraj Khedkar. Others who suffered burn injuries include residents Zishan Khan, Yogesh Jadhav, Mrinal Mayank, security guard Rahul Sharma and society chairman Naresh Devadiga.
During the rescue operation, two LPG cylinders in the kitchen exploded, leaving three residents and two firefighters injured. Despite the dangerous situation, fire personnel managed to rescue a 15-year-old boy from inside the burning flat in a critical condition. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has been identified as Tarsh Kamal Khetan.
After nearly half an hour of efforts, the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading to other parts of the building. However, the flat was completely gutted. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In a statement, Pune Fire Brigade Chief Devendra Potphode revealed that the building’s permanent fire safety system was found to be non-functional at the primary level, and an inquiry has been ordered.
He also issued an appeal to citizens, stating: “Firefighting systems in buildings are meant for the safety of residents and their families. It is the responsibility of every society to ensure that these systems remain fully operational.”
