Pune-Nashik Highway Choked: 12-Hour Traffic Snarl in Alekhind
Cement concreting and diversion of heavy vehicles via Alephata lead to massive congestion, commuters suffer for hours.
Pune: Traffic on the Pune-Nashik highway came to a grinding halt in the Alekhind area near Alephata after 9 pm on Saturday, September 27, with the gridlock continuing well into Sunday, September 28. The jam, stretching up to 15 kilometers across Alekhind, Bota, and surrounding areas, left vehicles stranded for more than 12 hours.
Officials said the bottleneck was caused by ongoing cement concreting work on the Nashik side of the highway, which forced vehicles into single-lane movement, while heavy traffic from the Ahilyanagar-Manmad highway was simultaneously diverted via Alephata.
This is the third such major jam in the Alekhind stretch within two weeks, with similar incidents reported on September 14 and 25. Passengers and drivers expressed frustration, as vehicles queued for hours, some up to four kilometers long, without relief.
Alephata Police, Sangamner Highway Police, Ghargaon Police, and National Highways Department personnel have been jointly working to ease the congestion, but rising demand for an immediate alternative route is now gaining momentum.
