Pune: The long-awaited Metro extension from Shivajinagar to Kondhwa, with a proposed spur to NIBM, is a step closer to reality as MahaMetro confirmed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be ready within the next three months once an agency is appointed.

The 20-km corridor is expected to bring a major boost to public transport in Kondhwa, NIBM, and Yewalewadi — areas witnessing rapid urban growth but facing severe traffic congestion. The line will be an extension of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro (PMR-3), currently under construction by Tata under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

MahaMetro officials said tenders have already been floated and bids received for appointing a consultant to prepare the DPR. “The appointment process is in the final stages, and the DPR will be ready within three months. It will then be submitted to the state government and subsequently to the Union government for approval,” a senior official said.

The demand for Metro connectivity to this stretch was recently raised in the monsoon session of the legislature by MLC Yogesh Tilekar, who pointed out worsening traffic issues in Kondhwa and Yewalewadi. “This region urgently needs a dedicated Metro line. I will follow up with MahaMetro and the divisional commissioner to ensure the project is fast-tracked under the PPP model,” Tilekar said.

Officials also noted that the state government had previously approved Metro lines linking Khadakwasla, Hadapsar, Swargate, and Kharadi. Additionally, an extension from Hadapsar to Saswad has been proposed under Metro Line-4 to improve access to the upcoming Purandar airport.

With the DPR on track, authorities believe the Shivajinagar–Kondhwa line will play a crucial role in addressing Pune’s transport challenges in the southern corridor.
