Maharashtra Govt Approves 18 Government Cancer Care Centres With Free Advanced Treatment
Mumbai, October 1, 2025: In a major healthcare initiative, cancer patients in Maharashtra will now receive international-standard treatment at government hospitals. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state has approved the establishment of the Maharashtra Cancer Care, Research and Education Foundation (MAHACARE Foundation).
Through this foundation, a three-tier network (L1, L2, L3) of 18 hospitals will be set up across the state. Treatments to be provided include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer diagnosis, surgeries, physiotherapy, psychological support, palliative care, medicines, and research facilities. Post-graduate and super-specialty education in oncology will also be available, along with public awareness programs for lifestyle-based cancer prevention.
Hospital Network:
- L1 (Apex Centre):Â Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
- L2 (8 Centres):Â Government medical colleges in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Mumbai (JJ Hospital), Kolhapur, Pune (BJ Medical College), Nashik, and Amravati.
- L3 (9 Centres):Â Government medical colleges in Ambajogai (Beed), Nanded, Yavatmal, Mumbai (Cama & Albless Hospital), Satara, Baramati, Jalgaon, Ratnagiri, and Shirdi Sansthan Hospital.
The project has been allocated ₹1,529 crore for L2 centres and ₹147 crore for L3 centres, with an initial equity capital of ₹100 crore. Considering the ICMR report projecting an 11% rise in cancer cases by 2025, this policy is expected to significantly strengthen Maharashtra’s fight against cancer.
