New Delhi, October 10, 2025: The Supreme Court has emphasized that sex education should be introduced to students at a much younger age instead of beginning from Class 9 onwards. The court underlined the importance of making children aware of physical and emotional changes associated with puberty early on.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and Alok Aradhe observed that incorporating sex education into the curriculum at an earlier stage would help students better understand the developmental transitions they experience during adolescence. The judges noted that early awareness can foster healthy attitudes and responsible behavior among young people.

“We believe that sex education should start before Class 9. The concerned authorities must consider suitable measures to ensure that children are educated about puberty, its effects, and the necessary care and precautions,” the bench stated.

The observations came during a hearing related to a 15-year-old boy’s appeal against the Allahabad High Court’s decision denying him bail in a case involving serious charges under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the POCSO Act.

Considering that the accused was a minor himself, the Supreme Court had earlier ordered his release on bail in September, with conditions to be determined by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Additionally, the apex court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit an affidavit detailing how sex education is currently implemented in higher secondary schools across the state.

The bench’s remarks have once again brought attention to the need for a structured and age-appropriate sex education program in schools, aimed at promoting awareness, safety, and informed understanding among students.
