Pune: Wagholi Youth Electrocuted During Kojagiri Pournima Procession; Seven Organisers Booked For Negligence
Pune, October 11, 2025: A festive procession in Wagholi took a tragic turn when a 23-year-old man was electrocuted after a decorated tractor came in contact with a high-tension power line during Kojagiri Pournima celebrations. The police have booked seven members of the organising committee for negligence.
The incident occurred on October 6 in Ubale Nagar, Wagholi, when the iron structure erected atop a tractor by the Ramdas Shivtej Mitra Mandal touched an overhead electric wire. The deceased has been identified as Nitin Mohan Pawar, a resident of Ubale Nagar.
According to the police, the Mandal had been specifically instructed by authorities to keep the height of the tractor decoration within 14 feet and width within 10 feet to avoid any contact with overhead electric and telephone cables. However, the organisers allegedly built a 17-foot-tall and 14-foot-wide iron structure fitted with lighting and sound systems.
At around 8 pm, while the procession was moving from Renuka Park towards Ahilya Nagar, the upper portion of the structure brushed against a live high-tension cable, causing a spark. Pawar, who was holding the iron frame, received a severe electric shock and collapsed on the road.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by police personnel and Mandal members, but was declared dead on arrival.
An Accidental Death Report (ADR) was initially registered at Wagholi Police Station. Following an inquiry that confirmed violation of safety instructions, a formal FIR was registered under Sections 105 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against seven individuals, including the Mandal office-bearers and the tractor driver.
Assistant Police Inspector Vijay Chandan, who is investigating the case, said, “The deceased was also associated with the Mandal. An FIR has been lodged, and further investigation is underway. No arrests have been made so far.”
