The pilot project, launched in Rajasthan, aims to improve cleanliness and passenger confidence through washable covers for train blankets.

In a step aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and hygiene during train journeys, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday launched a pilot project introducing washable covers for blankets used in air-conditioned coaches. The initiative, unveiled at Khatipura Railway Station in Jaipur, has been rolled out initially on the Jaipur–Asarwa Express, with plans for a nationwide expansion in the coming months.

Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw said the decision was driven by long-standing passenger feedback regarding the cleanliness of onboard bedding. “Blankets have been used in our railway system for years, but there has always been a doubt in the minds of our passengers. To remove that doubt, a new initiative has been taken today – the introduction of blanket covers,” he stated.

Calling it a “purely passenger-centric step,” the minister added that this initiative is part of the broader transformation taking place in the railway sector. “Today, a big step is being taken to install blanket covers. Even small stations have seen improved facilities — from platform height and length adjustments to the installation of covers and signboards for passengers’ convenience. These measures have already been implemented at around 65 stations across Rajasthan,” Vaishnaw noted.

The Ministry of Railways described the project as an effort to raise standards of cleanliness and comfort during train travel, particularly in the upcoming festive season when passenger volumes surge. The move aligns with the railways’ continued focus on modernising passenger amenities and improving overall service quality.
