Goa Gets Cheaper: Major GST Cuts Slash Prices for Tourists and Boost Local Economy
Imagine paying less for everything on your next trip to Goa — from your stay and transport to seafood and snacks. That’s now a reality, thanks to significant GST rate reductions rolled out by the central government. These changes are not just good news for tourists but also a much-needed lift for thousands of Goan workers and small business owners who rely on tourism for their livelihood.
Tourism remains one of Goa’s most vital economic pillars, contributing 16% to the state’s GDP. With over 2.5 lakh people employed in hospitality and tourism services as of March 2025, the recent tax reforms are expected to make a visible impact across the sector — lowering costs, increasing demand, and encouraging more travel activity across the state.
What’s Now Cheaper in Goa? Pretty Much Everything Tourists Love
Stay & Accommodation: Hotels and Guesthouses Drop Prices
Essential hotel supplies like toiletries, tableware, and breakfast items are now taxed at 5% instead of 18%, cutting related costs by around 11%. This drop means more budget-friendly stays for travelers and better margins for accommodation providers.
Food & Drink: From Seafood to Street Snacks
The GST on packaged coconut water and similar products has been slashed from 12% to 5%, bringing prices down by roughly 6.25%. Popular dining spots — including restaurants, cafés, beach shacks, juice stalls, and beverage kiosks — are also seeing their GST drop from 12% to 5%, which is expected to reduce customer bills by about 6.25%.
These changes directly benefit around 8,000 workers in Goa’s food and beverage sector, while also making local cuisine more affordable for tourists.
Transport: Big Win for Taxi and Bike Rentals
Tourists who prefer exploring Goa by rented car or bike will now find it easier on the pocket. GST on small cars (up to 1200cc) and motorcycles (up to 350cc) has been cut from 28% to 18%, reducing the on-road tax and making vehicle rentals significantly cheaper.
With nearly 40,000 locals depending on the taxi and bike rental business, this move is expected to provide a major boost to the sector while offering better deals to travelers.
Marine Sector: Relief for Fisherfolk and Seafood Industry
Goa’s coastal economy will also benefit. Items such as fishing nets, aquaculture feed, and other related supplies will now carry a 5% GST, down from previous rates of 12% to 18%. This change is expected to bring a 6.25% to 11% price drop, easing operational costs for fishers and marine businesses.
Bakery & Packaged Food: Sweet Deals for Snack Lovers
Whether it’s pastries, biscuits, noodles, namkeen, pasta, or chocolates, the new 5% GST rate is bringing down the price of popular packaged food items. These goods, previously taxed at higher rates, are now 6.25% to 11% cheaper — a delight for both locals and tourists.
