Pune | October 19, 2025 — As Diwali approaches and many families leave the city to celebrate with relatives, Pune is witnessing a worrying rise in house break-ins. In one such alarming case, a CCTV video from Konark Housing Society in Wagholi has gone viral, sparking outrage among citizens and renewed criticism of the city’s policing.

The incident took place at Konark Housing Society, located on Keshnanand Road, known for its upscale residences. The footage, first shared on X (formerly Twitter) by social media account DefenceBrat, shows four masked men operating with chilling calmness. The group is seen forcing open a flat door on an upper floor and entering the home within seconds.

Residents say the burglars acted with complete confidence, displaying no fear of being caught. The swift, well-planned execution of the break-in has raised serious concerns about the safety of even gated societies.

“Such crimes during the festive season are not new, but the brazenness this year is shocking,” said one resident, adding that many people have left their homes unattended for Diwali.

Social media has been flooded with angry reactions. “I have been in Pune for 20 years. It has always been like this. Thieves come, loot empty flats, and vanish,” wrote one user, Ashish Kumar. Others questioned how an “elite housing society” could lack adequate security personnel and blamed local authorities for failing to prevent recurring incidents.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar also faced online criticism, with users accusing the police of misplaced priorities. One sarcastic comment read, “The commissioner’s top priority seems to be modified silencers, not citizen safety.”

In response, police have appealed for calm and urged residents to remain vigilant. Authorities have advised citizens to inform trusted neighbours before leaving town and ensure CCTV cameras are functional. However, residents are demanding more proactive patrolling and a concrete plan to prevent organised burglaries during the festive period.

The viral Wagholi incident has once again exposed Pune’s growing security concerns and the need for stronger preventive measures in residential societies ahead of the Diwali season.
