Veteran actor succumbs to kidney failure at Hinduja Hospital; leaves behind a rich legacy in TV & film comedy

Veteran Indian actor Satish Shah, renowned for his iconic role as Indravadan Sarabhai in the beloved television sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, passed away at the age of 74. He died of kidney failure at Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital, as confirmed by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit.

In a video message shared on Instagram, Ashoke Pandit said: “Satish Shah was rushed to hospital after experiencing discomfort at home. He was admitted to Hinduja Hospital, where he passed away within hours. His mortal remains will be brought to his residence in Bandra, and the details of his last rites will be shared soon.”

Satish Shah’s career spanned several decades, and he became a household name early on with his work in the 1984 television series Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi on DD National, where he portrayed 55 different characters in 55 episodes — a notable achievement at the time.

Over the years he starred in shows like Ghar Jamai (1997) and All The Best, and became widely recognised for his role as the flamboyant and sarcastic Indravadan in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004). His on-screen chemistry as the husband of Maya Sarabhai (played by Ratna Pathak Shah) and father of Sahil (played by Sumeet Raghavan) remains memorable.

In cinema, he appeared in films such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1984), Hero Hiralal (1988), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004) and Ra.One (2011) among others.
