Pune, October 28, 2025: lllegal tree felling and soil excavation have been reported along the ecologically sensitive riparian zone of the Mula River in Pimpale Nilakh under the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Concerned citizens have lodged a formal police complaint and submitted photographic evidence of the ongoing activity.

The complaint highlights that these activities violate the directives of the Supreme Court–appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which has categorically instructed all authorities to “Halt all proposed tree felling till the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Writ Petition(s)(Civil) No(s). 1164/2023 and enquire into the complaint. Take cognizance and necessary action to preserve and protect the dense foliage and wildlife.”

“This is not just a matter of trees being cut, it’s a violation of Supreme Court directions and a direct threat to the ecological balance of the riverbank,” said Pune River Revival volunteers.

“We urge the authorities to act immediately to stop further damage and identify those responsible.”

The Mula River riparian zone plays a crucial role in maintaining Pune’s ecological stability — supporting biodiversity, aiding groundwater recharge, and acting as a natural buffer against floods. Experts warn that continued destruction of this zone will have serious long-term consequences for both people and wildlife.

The damaged species like Paanjambhul (syzygium salicifolium) are among the most ecologically important trees in riparian areas. They must be protected as a part of any conservation or restoration effort. Furthermore, the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra holds the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the protection and preservation of these riparian forests under the directions of the Supreme Court and the CEC.

Citizens have appealed to the PCMC Police Commissioner and the PCMC garden department to investigate the incident and initiate immediate action to uphold the CEC’s directives and protect the river’s natural ecosystem.
