Chandigarh Bans Six Dog Breeds Including Pitbull, Rottweiler, and Bulldog Under New Pet Laws
Chandigarh, October 31, 2025: The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has officially banned six aggressive dog breeds — American Pitbull, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, and Rottweiler — under the newly notified Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Pet and Community Dogs Bye-Laws, 2025. The move aims to enhance public safety and regulate the keeping and breeding of potentially dangerous dogs within city limits.
According to the notification, registration of these banned breeds will no longer be permitted after the by-laws come into effect. However, owners who already possess these breeds will be allowed to keep them, provided they register their pets within a 45-day grace period.
After this buffer period, anyone found breeding, selling, or keeping these banned breeds will face penalties, including the seizure of the dogs by authorised authorities. Existing owners are required to ensure that such dogs are always muzzled and leashed in public and trained by certified dog trainers registered with the municipal corporation to prevent any untoward incidents.
The new by-laws also impose strict limits on the number of dogs a family can keep based on property size — one dog in a house up to five marlas, two in houses below 12 marlas, three in homes smaller than one kanal, and four in one-kanal houses.
Additionally, pet owners are prohibited from taking dogs to public places such as Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Rock Garden, Leisure Valley, and other designated parks. Owners must also ensure that dogs do not defecate in public areas, and if they do, they must clean up after them. Failure to comply will attract fines.
The by-laws also make it mandatory for dog breeders, pet shop owners, trainers, and groomers to register with the civic body. Feeding of community or stray dogs must occur only in designated areas to maintain cleanliness and prevent public nuisance.
The civic authorities will also have the power to impound unattended dogs causing nuisance through excessive barking or roaming unsupervised in public areas. Violators of these by-laws will be fined by the Registration Authority in accordance with the prescribed legal provisions.
Officials stated that the regulations are intended to ensure responsible pet ownership, prevent accidents, and maintain harmony between pet owners and the community.
