Residents near Uttam Nagar have been warned after a counterfeit ₹500 note was discovered at a local State Bank of India (SBI) branch. The incident came to light when a customer attempted to deposit a stack of ₹500 notes, and the bank’s counting machine beeped, signaling the presence of a fake note.

Upon closer inspection, the note appeared almost identical to a genuine ₹500, with one subtle difference: Gandhi’s reflection looked slightly cartoonish. The discovery highlights how sophisticated counterfeit notes can be and serves as a caution for the public to carefully check their currency before making transactions.

“The photo is taken in reflection, so it’s not something you can notice easily—you have to look carefully,” the observer explained. People in the Uttam Nagar area are advised to remain alert and verify their notes thoroughly.

The Reddit post drew amusement and concern from users. One commented, “It looks so real. If they had put so much effort into everything else, why didn’t they perfect the sketch? Still, it could circulate easily since most people don’t check notes thoroughly.”

Others shared playful remarks, including, “Amitabh Bachchan if he was bald,” “Seems Gandhi ji and Simpson did a collab,” and “Looks like a fake currency artist didn’t put any effort.” One user thanked the poster, saying, “I have my account in that bank…thank you for informing.”

When asked about the bank’s response, the individual said the staff refused to take responsibility and told him not to return to the branch with the counterfeit note.

Fake Currency Bust in Maharashtra

In an unrelated incident, Nashik rural police arrested two men from Madhya Pradesh for possessing fake Rs 500 notes worth Rs 10 lakh. The raid took place on the Mumbai-Agra highway near Malegaon on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, authorities detained Nasir Akram Ansari (34) and Mohammed Zubair Ansari (33) outside a hotel, seizing 2,000 counterfeit notes along with two mobile phones.

The accused were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sent to eight days of police custody. Authorities are investigating the source and distribution network of the fake currency.
