The world of Indian music and cinema bid farewell to one of its most cherished voices, Sulakshana Pandit, who passed away on Thursday, November 6, at the age of 71. The veteran singer and actor breathed her last at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital after battling a prolonged illness. According to her brother and renowned music composer Lalit Pandit, she suffered a cardiac arrest around 8:00 p.m. “She passed away today around 8.00 pm. She suffered cardiac arrest. Her funeral will be tomorrow (November 7) at 12.00 noon,” Lalit confirmed to mid-day.

Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana Pandit belonged to a family steeped in musical heritage. The niece of legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj and sister to the celebrated composer duo Jatin-Lalit, music flowed naturally in her veins.

She began singing professionally at the age of nine and made her playback debut in 1967. Her talent soon shone through with timeless melodies that captured the hearts of millions. One of her most iconic songs, Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara from Sankalp (1975), earned her the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Another early gem, Saat Samandar Paar Se, a duet with Lata Mangeshkar from Taqdeer (1967), remains a fond memory for music lovers.

Sulakshana Pandit’s artistic pursuits weren’t confined to the recording studio. She made a graceful transition to acting with Uljhan (1975), where she starred opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Her expressive performances and dignified presence soon made her one of the most admired faces of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Over the years, she featured in a string of memorable films, including Sankoch (1976), Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar. She shared the screen with stalwarts like Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi cinema.

Beyond her illustrious career, Sulakshana’s personal life was marked by a poignant love story that never found its happy ending. During the making of Uljhan, she developed deep feelings for her co-star Sanjeev Kumar. However, Sanjeev was in love with Hema Malini, whose refusal left him heartbroken. When Sulakshana later expressed her own wish to marry him, he gently turned her down. The rejection deeply affected Sulakshana, and after Sanjeev Kumar’s passing in 1985, she chose never to marry, retreating gradually from the limelight. In a bittersweet twist of fate, she departed this world on the same date—November 6—that marked Sanjeev Kumar’s death 39 years ago.

Sulakshana Pandit’s journey reflects the blend of artistry, emotion, and grace that defined an entire generation of Hindi cinema. Her songs continue to resonate across decades, echoing the purity of her voice and the sincerity of her soul.
