Massive commercial centre to reshape Thane district’s economic landscape with global-standard infrastructure

A new world-class business district, modelled on Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), is set to come up across a vast 1,300-acre stretch spanning Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan. The Maharashtra government has formally announced plans to develop this commercial hub, which officials say will be “one step ahead of BKC” in scale, connectivity and international-grade planning.

The project will be strategically located at the gateway of Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli and Panvel Municipal Corporation, giving a major push to the growth of all four metropolitan clusters. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has been appointed as the nodal agency, working with technical guidance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

According to officials, the commercial city will cover villages such as Datiwali, Mhatardi, Betawade, Agasan, Ayre, Kopar, Bhopar, Nandivali, Panchanand and Katai — areas that fall under the limits of TMC and Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. Land acquisition notices have already been issued, signalling rapid movement on the groundwork.

The government envisions the region as a future international business hub with high-quality road networks, smart infrastructure and multimodal connectivity. Thirteen traffic strategies have been drafted to handle future congestion, ensuring smoother travel across the district.

The proposed hub will be seamlessly connected to key upcoming infrastructure, including the Kalyan–Taloja Metro Line, Airoli–Katai Road and the Nilje Growth Centre. It will also integrate with CIDCO’s planned corporate park in Kharghar, creating a continuous economic belt stretching from Thane to Navi Mumbai.

Planners describe the upcoming centre as a catalyst for employment and enterprise. Large commercial establishments, office spaces, business parks and ancillary services are expected to boost local jobs and attract both domestic and international investments.

Experts say the new hub will elevate Thane’s role in Maharashtra’s economic map, transforming it from a residential–industrial zone into a global commercial powerhouse. The combination of modern mobility, extensive land availability and coordinated development with Navi Mumbai’s urban expansion is expected to make the district a major corporate magnet in the coming years.
