Want to Become Chartered Accountant ? Complete Step-by-Step Process to CA Qualification After 12th
Three-level course structure includes Foundation, Intermediate and Final with mandatory 3-year articleship, total duration 4.5 to 5 years
Chartered Accountant is among the most respected professional qualifications in finance and accounting. The course is regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and follows a structured path through three main levels: Foundation, Intermediate, and Final, along with mandatory practical training. The entire process typically takes 4.5 to 5 years to complete.
Level 1: CA Foundation
The Foundation course serves as the entry point for students after Class 12. Students from any stream, commerce, science, or arts, can register after passing their 12th board examination from a recognized board.
Registration is done online through ICAI’s Self-Service Portal. Students need to fill the form, upload required documents including Class 10th and 12th mark sheets, photograph, and signature, and pay the registration fees. Registration can be done after appearing for 12th board exams, but the Foundation exam can only be attempted after clearing Class 12.

A minimum study period of four months is required after registration before appearing for the exam. The examination consists of four papers, each carrying 100 marks. Paper 1 covers Principles and Practice of Accounting, Paper 2 includes Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting, Paper 3 tests Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics, while Paper 4 examines Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge.
To pass, students need a minimum of 40 percent in each individual paper and an aggregate of 50 percent across all four papers.
Level 2: CA Intermediate
After clearing the Foundation exam, students can register for the Intermediate level. Graduates with specific minimum marks can also enter directly at this level. Registration is completed through the ICAI SSP portal.
Before starting practical training, students must complete a four-week Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills. An eight-month study period is mandatory before appearing for Intermediate exams.
The Intermediate level has two groups with four papers each, totaling eight papers. Group I includes Advanced Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, Taxation, and Cost and Management Accounting. Group II covers Auditing and Assurance, Financial Management and Economics for Finance, Advanced Accounting, and Enterprise Information Systems and Strategic Management.
The passing criteria requires a minimum of 40 percent in each paper and an aggregate of 50 percent across all papers in the group.
Mandatory articleship training
Articleship is three years of mandatory practical training under a practicing Chartered Accountant. Students can register and start after clearing one or both groups of CA Intermediate and completing the ICITSS training.
This training provides hands-on experience in auditing, accounting, and taxation. Students receive a stipend during this period, which serves as both learning and earning opportunity.
Level 3: CA Final
The Final level represents the last stage of the CA course. Students must clear both groups of CA Intermediate and complete at least 2.5 years of articleship before registering for Final. Registration can be done during the last six months of articleship.
Students must complete the Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills after articleship but before Final exams. The Final exam has two groups with four papers each, covering advanced topics.
Group I includes Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management, Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics, and Corporate and Economic Laws. Group II covers Strategic Cost Management and Performance Evaluation, Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation, Indirect Tax Laws, and Integrated Business Solutions.
The same passing criteria applies: minimum 40 percent in each paper and 50 percent aggregate across all papers in the group.
ICAI membership
After successfully clearing all exam levels and completing articleship training, candidates can apply for membership with ICAI. Upon approval, they officially become Chartered Accountants and can use the CA designation before their name.
The CA qualification opens doors to careers in auditing, taxation, financial management, consulting, and corporate finance. Many CAs also establish their own practice or join multinational corporations in senior financial roles.
