D-Mart Employee Busted for Barcode Scam Causing Lakhs in Losses
Shocking internal fraud has been uncovered at a D-Mart store in Alwar, Rajasthan, where an employee manipulated barcodes to cheat the company out of a huge sum.
Narendra, son of Kushal and resident of Upala Sonava, allegedly replaced genuine barcodes on high-value items with fake ones, making them appear cheaper at checkout and resulting in significant financial losses.
How the Scam Operated
Investigators found that Narendra was applying self-made counterfeit barcodes on expensive products. These fake barcodes were programmed to display lower prices.
Whenever the items were scanned at the billing counter, the system registered a much-reduced price, allowing the employee and possibly his associates to acquire merchandise for far less than its actual value.
The scam was detected during routine stock reconciliation and sales audits conducted by D-Mart management. Large discrepancies between inventory records and billed sales raised suspicion, prompting the company to file a formal complaint with the Aravali Vihar police.
According to Police Officials, the investigation confirmed that the irregularities were not technical errors but deliberate acts of fraud. Narendra had been intentionally replacing authentic barcodes with fake ones to manipulate prices.
Narendra was immediately arrested by the police and faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 420 for cheating and fraud, as well as forgery. ASI Shankar Lal added, “We are examining how long this fraud persisted and whether other employees or outsiders were involved in assisting him.”
