Pune: Undri Residents Welcome PMC’s Culvert Work But Slam Poor Condition Of Road Near Hill Green School And Traffic Management
Pune, November 19, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally initiated construction of a long-pending box culvert over the nala near Sanskriti School in Undri. The project, which residents say was expected to begin in 2022, had remained stalled for reasons never clarified by the authorities. With election season nearing, the civic administration has accelerated the pace of infrastructure work in the area.
Pune Pulse too in its several previous news reports had reported about the deteriorating condition of the nala next to Sanskriti school.
Local residents have welcomed the move, stating that the widening of the nala and the installation of a durable culvert were essential to prevent flooding and improve road safety. They expressed hope that the new structure would help streamline waterflow during monsoons and reduce risks associated with the narrow, weakened stretch.
However, the ongoing diversion created to facilitate the work has resulted in significant traffic congestion. Vehicles are currently being rerouted via the Hill Green School road, which itself is in poor condition. Commuters claim the detour is worsening travel time and creating daily bottlenecks, especially during school hours.
Residents have also pointed out that the diverted stretch had earlier undergone major excavation for drainage line installation. Despite multiple follow-ups, the road remains uneven and incomplete even months after the pipeline work was carried out. Large potholes, broken patches and dust continue to trouble motorists and pedestrians.
Calling the situation “avoidable and poorly managed,” people from nearby societies have urged PMC to immediately resurface the road with tar and ensure it is motorable until culvert construction is completed. They have also demanded deployment of traffic wardens during peak hours to regulate movement and prevent gridlocks.
Local citizen groups say the ongoing work is crucial but must be accompanied by parallel measures to maintain mobility and safety. They emphasised that infrastructure upgrades should not come at the cost of resident inconvenience.
According to PMC officials, the culvert construction is expected to be completed within the next two months.
