Pune: Mandap Business Should Get Essential Service Status, Demand Raised In Maharashtra Monsoon Assembly
Mumbai/Pune, June 25, 2026: Chinchwad BJP MLA Mahesh Landge has urged the Maharashtra government to grant essential service and industry status to the mandap (event infrastructure) business, highlighting its role in providing employment to lakhs of people across the state.
Raising the issue during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Landge said the sector continues to face financial and operational challenges due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising costs, complex permit procedures and employment instability.
Speaking in the Assembly, Landge emphasized that the mandap business is not limited to weddings and social events. He noted that the sector also plays a crucial role in government programmes, disaster management operations, elections, health camps, cultural events and various public service activities.
He pointed out that despite supporting the livelihoods of thousands of workers, artisans and business owners, the sector has not received adequate recognition or policy support from the government.
Among the key demands raised by the MLA were granting the mandap business essential service status, recognising it as an industry, simplifying the permit approval process, introducing a single-window clearance system, extending welfare schemes to workers, providing insurance coverage and offering skill development training to those associated with the sector.
Landge also highlighted the severe economic losses suffered by the industry during the pandemic, stating that many workers and business operators lost their livelihoods. He added that the sector continues to struggle with increasing operational expenses, regulatory hurdles and financial constraints.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad MLA assured stakeholders that he would continue pursuing the matter with the state government and advocate for measures aimed at strengthening the sector.
“The mandap business is the backbone of livelihood for lakhs of families. If this sector is supported and protected, it will secure employment for a large workforce and ensure financial stability for thousands of households,” Landge said.
He called upon the Maharashtra government to take concrete decisions at the earliest to provide recognition, protection and growth opportunities to the mandap business and its workforce.
