Pune: NIBM–Undri Residents Urge PMC Commissioner To Set Up Waste Processing Units In Every Prabhag
Pune, November 21, 2025: Residents from the NIBM–Undri Road area have submitted a formal representation to Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, demanding urgent and decentralised improvements to the city’s solid waste management system. The memorandum, dated November 17, 2025, was issued by the NIBM Undri Road Residents Forum and highlights long-standing civic concerns affecting the neighbourhood and several other parts of Pune.
The residents met Pavnit Kaur, additional commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation who assured that the suggestion would be taken up for discussion.
According to the forum, Pune’s waste processing infrastructure is currently overstretched, with several garbage depots either shut or operating at limited capacity. As a result, garbage collection trucks are often forced to wait three to four days before they can offload accumulated waste. During this delay, trash piles up at multiple locations, creating unhygienic conditions and emitting foul odour.
The residents emphasised that waste collectors struggle to identify appropriate dumping or transfer points, which leads to scattered waste across public areas. Such conditions, they said, pose a serious health risk to local communities, especially in densely populated pockets.
The memorandum also pointed out that slum pockets lack a structured, free garbage collection system, forcing many residents to dispose of waste along the roadside. The forum suggested that if PMC establishes a dedicated, no-cost waste pickup mechanism in these areas, roadside littering could be significantly reduced.
Another major concern raised in the appeal is the misuse of amenity spaces. Residents complained that several amenity plots are left unguarded, allowing them to become informal dumping grounds. They requested PMC to secure such spaces with proper boundary walls to prevent illegal disposal of waste.
The forum urged the administration to install waste processing units in every prabhag (ward) to decentralise operations and ease the burden on the city’s main waste depots. They stressed that a clean environment is a fundamental right for all citizens and expressed hope that the civic body will take their demands seriously.
The appeal was signed by resident representatives Parveen Tambe, Manasi D, Deepti Bahal, and Shehnaz Chawla, who expressed confidence that the PMC will take prompt action toward improving cleanliness and public health standards in the region.
