Drunk Driver Speeds Through Pune Camp On Three Wheels, Video Sparks Outrage
Resident chases the car and alerts police as the vehicle is driven dangerously with a missing tyre
A shocking incident from Pune’s Camp area has raised serious concerns about drunk driving and public safety. A video that went viral late Tuesday shows a heavily intoxicated driver speeding through the city in a Kia car even after one of its tyres had come off completely. The vehicle, running on its bare rim, continued moving at high speed across busy roads, putting several lives at risk.
The incident took place between Kalyani Nagar and Pune Railway Station, an area that sees heavy evening traffic. According to witnesses, the driver appeared unsteady, and a party wristband was clearly visible on his hand when he stepped out of the car. Despite the missing tyre, he continued to push the damaged vehicle forward, creating sparks on the road and causing panic among commuters.
The situation could have turned into a major accident had it not been for the quick action of Satyajit Sarvade, a local youth who noticed the car swerving dangerously. Sarvade followed the vehicle for several kilometres and repeatedly tried to signal the driver to stop. When the driver ignored his attempts, Sarvade immediately informed the traffic police deployed for routine checks in the Camp area.
With timely coordination, the police managed to intercept the car and bring it to a stop. The driver was taken into custody and later booked for drunk driving at the Bund Garden Police Station. Officers said the man had been driving under the influence since leaving Kalyani Nagar, despite knowing that the tyre had detached and the vehicle was unstable.
Police officials also confirmed that the incident occurred during an active naka bandi operation. They said the driver’s behaviour showed a complete disregard for safety and could have caused serious harm to pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and other motorists.
The video clips, shot by bystanders and Sarvade himself, show the car dragging its metal rim along the road with a loud grinding sound. Many viewers expressed anger online, questioning how such reckless behaviour continues to be seen despite strict drunk-driving rules and repeated awareness drives in Pune.
Authorities have said they will take strict action against the accused and are reviewing CCTV footage from the route. Police have also praised Sarvade for his alertness and swift response, noting that citizens who act responsibly can help prevent major accidents.
Pune has seen an increase in drunk-driving cases this year, especially during weekends and late-night hours. Traffic officials said they will strengthen checks in sensitive areas and continue enforcement drives to ensure road safety in the city.
