New data shared by Harsh Goenka shows sharp income divide among states, with South India continuing to lead in opportunities and pay.

India’s income distribution is once again in focus after new state-wise salary figures went viral on social media. RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka shared the latest numbers from Forbes Advisor India, sparking debate over which parts of the country are progressing fastest and where income levels remain worryingly low. The data projects India’s average monthly income to reach Rs 28,000 by 2025, but differences between states remain wide.

According to the report, Delhi sits firmly at the top with an average monthly salary of Rs 35,000, driven by a mix of government jobs, corporate presence and a high concentration of service-sector employment. Karnataka follows close behind at Rs 33,000, powered largely by Bengaluru’s IT ecosystem, its thriving startup culture and the presence of global technology companies.

Maharashtra holds the third position with an average income of Rs 32,000. Business activity in Mumbai and Pune, along with consistent growth in finance, services and manufacturing, continue to push the state’s average upward. Telangana, at Rs 31,000, also remains among the strongest performers thanks to Hyderabad’s rapid IT expansion and rising job opportunities

At the other end of the spectrum, Bihar ranks the lowest with an average monthly income of just Rs 13,500. Andaman and Nicobar Islands follow at Rs 13,000, while Nagaland and Mizoram remain among the lower-income regions. Limited industrial growth, fewer large employers and constrained investment continue to restrict income levels in these areas.

The south continues to dominate the middle band of the list. Tamil Nadu’s average salary stands at Rs 29,000, Andhra Pradesh at Rs 26,000 and Kerala at Rs 24,500—reinforcing South India’s long-held reputation for strong employment opportunities and stable economic growth.

The full state-wise average monthly salary snapshot is as follows:

  • Delhi – Rs 35,000
  • Karnataka – Rs 33,000
  • Maharashtra – Rs 32,000
  • Telangana – Rs 31,000
  • Haryana – Rs 30,000
  • Tamil Nadu – Rs 29,000
  • Gujarat – Rs 28,000
  • Uttar Pradesh – Rs 27,000
  • Andhra Pradesh – Rs 26,000
  • Punjab – Rs 25,000
  • Kerala – Rs 24,500
  • Goa – Rs 23,500
  • Nagaland – Rs 14,000
  • Mizoram – Rs 14,500
  • Meghalaya – Rs 15,000
  • Bihar – Rs 13,500
  • Andaman & Nicobar – Rs 13,000

The figures highlight India’s uneven economic landscape, while some states surge ahead with high-skill industries and robust investment, others lag due to limited job creation and weaker industrial bases. The debate triggered online reflects a broader concern: India’s growth story must eventually lift incomes across all regions, not just pockets of prosperity.
