The long-awaited Pune Ring Road project, designed to address the growing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, has now taken a major step forward. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially set deadlines for the completion of the project, bringing renewed hope to residents who have been waiting for relief from the city’s chronic traffic snarls.

At the same time, the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur highway—an industrial lifeline crucial for the MIDC areas of Chakan and Talegaon—is also under the spotlight. Both infrastructure initiatives are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce accident risks in the Pune Metropolitan Region, officials say.

During the Winter Session of the Legislative Assembly, MLA Sunil Shelke highlighted serious delays and ongoing issues with the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur highway. The route is heavily used by thousands of daily commuters, industrial workers, and transport vehicles. Citizens, however, continue to face challenges such as potholes, narrow lanes, and traffic congestion, which have contributed to a rising number of accidents.

The government has set December 22 as the final date for submitting tenders for the highway project. Following this, the tender evaluation process will conclude, and work orders are expected to be issued within at least three months. The actual construction is projected to take approximately two to two-and-a-half years, meaning citizens will need to endure existing traffic and safety issues until then. MLA Shelke urged the government to consider interim measures to ease the burden on commuters and industrial traffic.

Key Updates on the Pune Ring Road

Addressing the concerns, Public Works Minister Dada Bhuse provided crucial updates on the Pune Ring Road. According to the minister, the western section of the ring road is expected to be completed by May 2027, while the eastern section is targeted for completion by 2028. Once operational, the ring road is anticipated to significantly reduce internal traffic within Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and allow external traffic to bypass city areas entirely, easing congestion and improving road safety.

Interim Measures for Highway Travelers

Regarding the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur highway, Minister Bhuse emphasized that while the tender process is in progress, technical and administrative reviews are ongoing to explore temporary measures that could make travel safer in the meantime. These measures could include filling potholes, widening lanes where possible, improving signage, installing lighting, and implementing better traffic management.

Growing Expectations Among Residents and Industries

The announcement has generated optimism among industrialists, commuters, and residents across Maval, Chakan, Shikrapur, and the broader Pune metropolitan area. With the long-term infrastructure projects now moving ahead and the government considering interim solutions, there is hope that daily travel difficulties will soon decrease and accident risks will be mitigated.
